This "some days you slay the dragon" sermon is by our good friend Speech Thomas. His
delivery and passion were unmistakable as he spoke on the dangers and fallacies surrounding the
popular subject "The Secret" that has swept public knowledge on TV shows, DVD's ect.
His allusion to "the Secret", the "Celistine Prophesy" (total self-fulfillment is the path to God) and
the "Di Vinci Code" (which claims Jesus was "just a man" that had a wife and kids) as being completely spurious, dangerous and wholely untruthful, were well presented. His research of
Biblical references to truths that far pre-date the so called "secret", his presentation of anti-Gnostic rhetoric, and his utter faithfulness to God's Word were evident as well.
Mark the claims of the "Secret"; then reflect on what Speech presents as God's answer. The "truth" to what we should be living in our lives.
Bottom Line: There is no "Secret", no "New Wave" notion, no "Gnostic" teaching, or any other "unknown", "secret" knowledge that God has not already given us, if we chose to believe it, a long, long, time ago.

Some may ask why bring more attention to it? "Just ignore it. It is a false teaching so it will go away."
A preacher’s job is to dispel any confusion; to bring people closer to God or keep them close to God.
2 Corinthians 10:4-6
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension {claim} that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
The serpent’s (Satan, Lucifer, The Devil, The Prince of the power of the air) craftiness wants us to believe there is something "More Real" that we should know about...instead of just that "religious, Jesus" stuff.
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
All Satan has to do is cause us to question what GOD says. Satan knowing that we made Jesus Lord of our lives, continues to make us entertain the other options.
'The Secret' claims that it is revealing something new and hidden.
1.) There are no more secrets
Romans 16:25-27
Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him— to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
The bible makes clear that there are truly no more secrets left to tell. Jesus has told us and been the example for us in everything: happiness, life, life beyond!
John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
Let’s dip into why 'The Secret' is so popular and discover the true gospel more deeply.
2.) Sowing and Reaping
'The Secret' talks about the law of attraction…
Everything that's coming into your life, you are attracting into your life. And it's attracted to you by virtue of the images you're holding in your mind."
What you put out is what you will get back to you.
The energies you project out will command the universe to bring more of those energies your way!
The bible has always said…
Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
The one who sows to please his sinful nature, {fear, doubt, hate, anger, faithlessness,} from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, (Gal. 5:21 – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faith, self-control) from that Spirit one will reap eternal life.
This is no “secret”, this is simply the Gospel of JESUS and it’s not new, it’s thousands of years old.
However, outside books can help us see the Holy Scriptures more clearly. But should never replace them!
Another “law of attraction”…
If you focus on the problem you will enhance the problem, if you focus on the solution, you will enhance the solution. Think of the solutions!
2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
What we sow we get back; large amounts or small. And that also applies to our actions and thoughts.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Think of the good things of life NOT your problems. You can acknowledge the problem, but then immediately expose what’s great in your life, then pray for what you want as if you have already received it! Thanking God for it!
God Says . . .
Phil. 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition {a request made for something desired}, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Why is there peace? (because you believe you have already got it)
- ( Losing weight) – Thank God for the body you desire, it’s already yours. You simply have to claim it.
- (Debt free) – Thank God for the freedom of being debtless. The discipline to refrain from over spending! Thank Him for it! You already have it, use it.
- (Romance in marriage) Thank God for your spouse, and for giving you gratitude for your spouse, and a re-kindled passion and romance, go get it, it’s yours!
- (Over coming past pains) Thank God for your ability forgive, and for a new day. Renewal!
- (Not understanding the bible or God: totally) – Thank God for the bible studies, and for opening your eyes to the Gospel (Good News)
Mark 11:24 Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
It’s called faith! (No secret)
3.) Always be Grateful (Attitude of gratitude)
One of 'The Secret' secrets. . .
Gratitude - be grateful for what you already have, and you will attract more good things.
The bible says. . .
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Philippians 2:14 Do everything without complaining or arguing,
Grateful for where you are NOW!
Your job, your status, your personal ministry.
Matthew 25:21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.
Be extremely grateful for your spouse, even your present afflictions. (sickness, loss of job, loss of a loved one)
BE grateful everyday with every person, every situation.
Even the bad situations!
James 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
4.) Have Great Faith
Another of 'The Secret' s secrets . . .
Visualization - Create pictures in your mind, imagining yourself enjoying the things that you desire as if you already have them. Then you'll attract them.
Mark 11:24 Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. It’s called faith!
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Faith isn't only for church issues i.e., evangelism, tithing, repentance etc. But ALSO your job, your health, your finances, your love life, your business ventures, creative dreams, mission dreams, etc.
A person can have different levels of faith: little, or great. We need to have great faith!
Matthew 8:10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
(A “rarity” but fully expected of disciples!)
Luke 24:38 He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
Jesus was always amazed when we had doubts, he still is!
So if you put “out there” faithless thoughts about yourself, you will attract negative and faithless people around you that affirm those thoughts.
If you “keep” faithful thoughts in your mind and put those “out there”, you will bring positive & faithful people to yourself.
Mark 11:23 "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.
What’s your mountain?
5.) It’s about who you are faithful to!
Faith is never controversial.
It’s faith in who that’s controversial.
We disciples often say “It’s not about who’s right, it’s about what’s right.” (speaking of denominational teachings)
The truth is…it IS about who’s right! (in relation to what is the "real" truth)
Who? Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, yourself, denominations, feel good systems, peaceful methods, others? Make your choice.
'The Secret' says: "Believe in yourself – everything is already within you." "You only have to become yourself."
That’s a BIG departure from the scriptures!
What does the bible say about self?
Bible says deny your “self” – become like Christ! Not become you. (BIG difference)
Mark 8:34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Romans 7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.
Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.
Jesus teaches us to hate our flesh. To become Christians (spiritual), receive the Holy Spirit,
and THEN we have everything in us we ever need!
Philippians 3:16 (Speaking to Christians) Only let us live up to what we have already attained.
We must live up to it! But it’s already within every disciple!
Romans 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
We should walk like a conqueror. You will attract other conquerors! Remembering: you are a conqueror because of Jesus Christ! Not on your own accord.
Mark 1:27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching—and with authority!
Jesus walked around with Authority! And spiritual confidence! And He want us to emulate Him.
Matthew 9:8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.
Man, since the beginning of time, has wanted to take the “Christ" out of Christmas! Or, “God’s spirit" out of Spiritual. We all have wanted to remove God from his throne, yet keep all of his amazing attributes and gifts to help us!
Many want godly results without God!
2 Timothy 3:1
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
(these phenomena have a form of godliness, but deny GOD’s POWER!)
1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have
6.) We preach the gospel!
Galatians 1:6
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!
1 John 2:8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
'The Secret' would have us believe that they are shining light on something that no one has known about for centuries. . .
Our Lord tells us true light, "truth" is already shining! Starting thousands of years ago, up until now!
Not started or "discovered" by the leading scientists, philosophers, and authors. But by Jesus Christ!
Revelation 2:24 - 26
Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you): Only hold on to what you have until I come. To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations.
We are not unaware of Satan’s schemes. . .
Colossians 2:10 And you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.
Now let’s LIVE like it!
Ephesians 4:14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
James 1:6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
